Fasting for a Breakthrough Day 13: Jan 17, 2025

Does God have an assignment for you? Of course He does. He has placed a calling on your life before you were even born. It is up to you to learn what that is and honor what God has planned for each and every one of us. When we pray, and seek his will for our lives, get ready.

My husband went to his Men’s Monday Bible Study. It just so happened that they were talking about fasting. When he came home, he shared with me what he heard. When you fast, it is suppose to be private, between you and the Lord.

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6: 16‬-‭18‬ ‭‬‬

I have read this verse many times, even before I started my fast. Yet, I felt led by the Holy Spirit to write about this. What I’ve learned is many of my Christian friends and family have no understanding of what fasting is. Honestly, only two to three months ago, I knew little about fasting. The fact is that Jesus didn’t say to us “if we fast,” but rather “when we fast,” that we should place our attention on the one who sent us!

So why then am I blogging about something so personal? Something that is just between me and the Lord? I felt that if I didn’t know, that there were many of you who also didn’t understand the command to fast. I believe this is part of my calling. To blog, to write about what God places on my heart. My personal journey of fasting, is just that, personal! But the description of what fasting is, I felt led to shout from the rooftops! As I was reading this morning, I found this quote that truly sums up fasting.

Christmas on the Beach

“Fasting is to purify the believer’s heart, to spend time focusing on God, to learn to deny the physical in order to grow the spiritual. Fasting is for repentance, for sorrow, for purification. Fasting helps us become more sensitive to God. Fasting is a discipline designed to help us draw closer to God.” And that is why we fast. To draw closer to our Creator, to know him so intimately, and finally, to learn what our calling is.
